Presearch supports low cost entry to running a node by enabling you to run a node on a 64 bit Raspberry Pi!
Why is this important?
Enabling Presearch Nodes to run on Raspberry Pi devices has been one of the most requested updates from our Beta node operators.
With the launch of support for Raspberry Pi, people from all over the world can now operate a Presearch node that runs 24/7 from their home with low energy usage and very inexpensively (for under $50).
If you’re unfamiliar with what Raspberry Pi is (no, it’s not the pie your grandma makes), it’s a cheap computer that has tons of functionality, making them the perfect device for running Presearch Nodes easily and inexpensively.
Downstream effects of decentralization
While we strive to be as decentralized is possible, when you decentralize one thing, it creates points of centralization downstream. For example, if AWS or other centralized cloud providers were to go offline, the Ethereum network would be significantly impacted, since 30% of Ethereum nodes have historically run on AWS and another 40% on the top 10 cloud hosting providers.
This is true for many of the Layer 1 protocols. Although the mechanisms on top of the centralized providers are decentralized, full decentralization is difficult when downstream, there are huge points of centralization.
If the US government forced Amazon to not allow any sort of cryptocurrency node on top of it, many blockchains would be in trouble. Many of the Presearch nodes within our network of community node operators run on top of this infrastructure as well. There are decentralized VPS providers, but being able to run a node from your home is one of the best ways to combat centralization. While there still will inevitably be points of centralization, it’s one less point, and increases the resilience of the project.
A large obstacle for decentralization of nodes is to make the nodes as lightweight as possible so that they can be run on as many devices as possible, as closely to each searcher as possible, resulting in lower latency and greater ubiquity. Being able to run a node on a low-cost, low-energy device is a huge step in this direction, and we’re proud to now offer this option to our community of thousands of node operators who now run more than 15,000 Presearch Nodes.
You can run a node detached from ANY hosting provider and run your own node using your own electricity and internet connection. With Raspberry Pi devices now supported, your node can be always on, with minimal energy usage, and no need to tie up your primary computer!
